Botanic Garden

Botanic Gardens 9" x 13" Colored Pencil/Pastel Pencil on Brown Colorfix

When I first started working on sanded surfaces, I loved working on dark-toned Colorfix paper by Artspectrum. What I found, however, is that the finished pieces seem so dark. They photograph very well and might make good prints but at this point, I don't do prints.
The thing I love about the sanded surfaces:
- you can work more quickly
- lights will go over the darks more easily
- landscapes are easier to "pull off" than on regular paper
I have moved on to a sanded support that I like much better, the pastelbord by Ampersand. What to do with all of the work done on colorfix???
Throwing caution to the wind, I have tried the pastel pencils (Carbothello by Stabilo) to rework these pieces making them "mixed media" pieces.

Cindy,

I am always amazed by how realistic your pieces look far away, and yet they are so interesting and full of color close-up. Do you work on an easel? I started to recently, and I think has helped me to feel more free to use more color because I can see how it works with the whole composition.

Awww, thanks Holly! I don't work on an easel. I've thought about it many times. When I was working in pastels and oils I did use an easel and I agree with you about helping to see the whole composition, and freeing up the use of color.

Cindy, I like the way you "see" art, and the way you interpret it through your artworks. Someday...when I grow up... ;-D

Hi Cindy,

Another wonderful piece! I especially like the contrast between the light and dark areas. The brown Colorfix paper definitely helps the pigment glow. You inspired me to 'throw caution to the wind' as well. I grabbed some of my pastel pencils and messed about on a bit of scrap Colorfix. While I won't be posting the results :-) I did enjoy the vividness of the colour. I have a soft spot for pastel work and I really enjoyed seeing how you added pastel to your coloured pencil piece.

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments about this piece. I do so appreciate them.

I'm reworking another cp piece on brown colorfix and it's amazing how much brighter and more interesting they are.

I apologize for being remiss in responding to your comments. I have been preparing for a workshop tomorrow....and I always seem to be down to the wire in getting ready ;-)
