Definitely Not Roses

"Definitely Not Roses"
6 x 8" pastel on sanded paper
Day 7 of 30 paintings in 30 days challenge
I've always been fascinated by abstracts. They look so easy and so fun. Well, the fun part is right but easy they aren't. Even though they don't represent a specific subject matter, they still deal with shapes, colors, edges and composition.

There are some basic shapes for abstracts and this one is based on the cruciform design. The idea is not to have your four quarters to be equal in size. The dark shape is the cruciform shape.

I had such a good time and learned so much I am going to finish out my 30 day challenge with the exploration of abstracts.

I really like this piece. The colors and shapes work to make a very balanced composition.
