I spent alot of time trying to get this arrangement set up so that the composition lead to the right side of the picture plane, and that the right side ended properly.
My pastel instructor, Deb, has been working along side us for the last couple of classes. It's very helpful to see how she starts and progresses through the piece.
It will focus more on color than the really dark shadows (ala "Pumpkins"), but still revealing form through light and shadow.

Initial Sketch with green pastel pencil and laying in beginning values with black and gray Nu-Pastel. This piece is about 12" x 16" on Wallis sanded paper.

I really appreciate seeing your set up with your little stage and lighting arrangements. I loved seeing your black box too. The reference photo came out really good. My photos of my set ups never look so good. I was wondering what exactly is a "black box" and what is it for? Your artwork is really terrific--a joy to see.

Hi Ann! I have such a long way to go with the pastels, and they are so clunky compared to colored pencils. Just practice and more practice!

I have my own version of a black box here at home that I made. It's just a medium sized card board box painted black with craft paint on the inside. I use it to do my still life setups and it helps to control the light so they is only one source. It also provides a very nice dark background behind my objects which I normally use. You could also paint the box any color you want, I've heard some paint their set-up boxes gray or white or another neutral color. I'm thinking of making a light gray one.
This black box is from the studio where I take pastel classes. It's just black foam core with a bottom and a back and little triangles on the side to hold the two parts together. It serves the same purpose as you can put side pieces on the control the light.
